IT@Cork Web 2.0 Conference Cork

I attended the much publicized Web 2.0 half-day conference in Cork, Ireland. I'm glad to say the controversy didn't overshadow the event except for the odd quip.
This latest event put on by IT@Cork caught my eye as something I’d be interested in so I duly attended on the 08 June. It the first events of theirs I attended but was suitably impressed. It just happened to lie on the hottest day Cork had seen this year and the AC malfunction the the hotel did not help.
The line up for the event was an interesting mix
Shel Israel
Who talked about the revolution of Web 2.0. A lot of what he said was in relation to blogging and the big ‘conversation’ taking place. There wasn’t a lot of what he said that I didn’t know already but brought a lot of people there up to speed a bit
Salim Ismail
Salim’s talk was the one that made the biggest impression on me. His more interesting point being on how most system’s are built around DATA and most business are all about events. Switching your point of view to Events rather than DATA is going to be much more benifical.
Fergus Burns
Fergus CEO of Nooked.com gave a talk from the Irish perspective on a start up.
Walter Higgins
Creator of PXN8 talked through his process of developing his app. Turns out he is a graduate of Sligo RTC like myself. Surprised that he used Perl as the language of choice but but he went on to explain that just because it was an older language doesn’t mean it still didn’t work.
Rob Burke
Rob from Microsoft demonstrated ASP.NET and ATLAS to build a site all the time using Firefox. Time’s a changing folks! While impressed with Rob typing out code onstage and using his girlfriends site as an example, I still found the whole workflow so far removed from what I do I the moment.
Well done also Tom Raftery, MC for the day. Sadly I didn’t get the chance to stay on for the Q&A after-wards but I intend to tag along to the Pre Summer Networking Event.
