published on Apr 22nd, 2005 // 0 Comments
The creation of a bottled water logo from start to finish employing a variety of popular photoshop techniques. The tutorial is quite long so put the kettle on now and get comfortable.
You can find the source files for this tutorial here
The tutorial can be broken down into 4 individual tutorials. You can start with any of them if you want. The tutorial was created with Adobe Photoshop 7 but should work fine with previous versions. See you at the end!
- 1 – The Sphere
- 2 – The Water
- 3 – The Ring
- 4 – The Text
The Sphere
- Open Photoshop and create a new document 500 × 500.
- Create a layer and name it Circle.
- Create another above it and name it Reflection.
- Use your marquee tool and (m) on the keyboard and make sure you are using the circle. Holding down your SHIFT key, left mouse click and drag towards the bottom of the document. This makes a symmetrical circle.
- Now that we have our selection you need to fill it with 50% GRAY
- Go to EDIT>FILL and select 50% GRAY or use #808080 for your foreground colour and use your Fill tool.
- On the Circle layer change the blending mode to HARD LIGHT
- To the Circle layer add the blend modes Inner Shadow, Inner Glow and Gradient Overlay using the settings below.
- For the Inner Glow blend mode colour, I used a light shade of blue (#6DCFF6).
- For the Gradient Overlay blend mode, I used two shades of blues, one dark(#2E3192) and one light (#6DCFF6).
- CTRL+ Click the Circle layer to select the circle.
- Now select the Reflection layer and contract the selection by 3.
- Set your colours to Default (d) then choose the Gradient Tool.
- With the circle still selected hold down your SHIFT key and left mouse click just above the circle and drag to the bottom and release.
- Go to EDIT>Transform Selection or on the keyboard (CTRL+t)
- Holding your SHIFT key drag the section from the bottom to the center of the circle.
- Next while you are still in the transform mode hold down your ALT key and move the selection from left to right.
- Move reflection slightly down away from top edge of sphere and reduce the layer Opacity to 43%
- Use a large soft edged brush with the Eraser tool, clear away some of the hard edge on the bottom of the reflection. Use your better judgment here.
- Duplicate the Circle Layer and flatten it (just the layer) and turn off the visibility of your original Circle Layer.
- Add an Inner Shadow style using the settings below on your new Circle duplicate layer.
- Your sphere is now completed. For neatness purposes you can gather these layers into a new layer set and call it Sphere (PS7+ only)
The Water
- Create a new layer called Water and fill with Black.
- Go to FILTER > RENDER > Difference Clouds.
- Go to FILTER > BLUR > Radial Blur. (Amount: 100% , Method: Spin, Quality : Best)
- Go to FILTER > BLUR > Gaussian Blur of 2px.
- Go to FILTER > SKETCH > Bas Relief. (Detail: 12, Smoothness: 8, Light Direction: Top)
- Go to FILTER > SKETCH > Chrome. (Detail: 12, Smoothness: 3)
- Add a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer to Water and making sure colorize is on, type in H:203 – S:57 – L: -10
- Now place your Water layers under your Sphere layers. You can now create a layer set again if you want and call it Water.
- And its as easy as that to make water! Its no set science so you can play around with it until you come up with something you think looks good, but for now we will carry on.
The Ring
- Now to make a metal ring. Create a new layer called Ring.
- CTRL+Click your original Circle Layer to make a circular selection.
- Then with your new Ring Layer in use Expand circular selection by 15 px.
- Fill this with 50% Grey and add styles ( Inner Shadow, Inner Glow and Gradient Overlay) with settings provided.
- Inner Glow colour is #6FCEF5 and the Gradient Overlay colours are #6FCFF5 and #2F358F.
- Duplicate and flatten layer. You can turn off the visibility of the original Ring layer now.
- With the selection active (if not CTRL+Click Ring Layer) Contract by 15px and hit Delete on your keyboard.
- Now add the styles (Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Inner Glow, Outer Glow, Bevel and Emboss, Satin and Pattern Overlay) again using the settings provided.
- The pattern used in the Pattern Overlay style is in Artists Surfaces and is called CSP Fine Concrete. Any grainy pattern will do really.
- Again you can pack these ring layers into a layer set called Ring
The Text
- Create a new layer called Text. Type in your logo text ‘Five Waters‘ and use the formatting provided.
- Duplicate layer and Rasterize it. Make selection and expand it by 2px, then fill with 50% grey.
- Add the styles (Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Inner Glow, Outer Glow, Bevel and Emboss, Satin and Color Overlay).
- Use the settings provided below. (Color Overlay colour is #25B1E6).
- Duplicate your original ‘Five Waters‘ Text layer. Place above step 11‘s layer and Rasterize.
- Add the styles ( Inner Shadow, Inner Glow, Outer Glow, Bevel and Emboss and Satin).
- Use the settings provided below.
- Next create a new Text Layer with the words ‘Irish Spring water‘
- Place just under previous Text layer and add a small Drop Shadow (Distance: 1px, Spread: 0px, Size: 3px).
- Save your work as you should have been doing all along.
- Go to IMAGE > Duplicate
- Go to LAYER > Flatten Image
- Go to IMAGE > ADJUSTMENTS > Auto Levels and then Auto Contrast
These last steps give more vitality to your image. It is up to you really. Whatever looks good.
Congratulations! If you have come this far you have done well. Hopefully you will have picked up tips and techniques along the way to create some stunning images yourselves.
