BarCampIreland 2006

Well done to the organisers of the first hopefully annual BarCampIreland. It was a great day. Great speakers, freebies and venue.

The event was held in over three floors in Cork’s new WebWorks building. The setup which included a spiral staircase and narrow walkways encouraged chat and networking. I had an interest in quite a few talks and it was difficult to time my attendance to all without being compromised.

The first talk I attended was by Simon McGarr from Digital Rights Ireland on Data Retention. It certainly fired people up who weren’t aware of the issues already. Following this, an informative talk on Microformats by Conor O’Neill. Then a lively discussion on SEO techniques chair by Eoghan McCabe. After lunch a Javascript discussion with Walter followed by an AJAX talk by Stephen Downey finishing up with 2 related talks. One by James Corbett on OPML and the other by Tom Morris on his OPML Mashups.

I would love to give a talk next year. I’m sorry I didn’t get to stay around longer and meet more people but my parking ticket had already accumulated €25 euros which would have been a steal for this great event.
